The NEA.

Basic Information

Study of two texts: one poetry and one prose text, informed by the study of the Critical Anthology.

Two essays 1500 words each. Both must respond to a different text and link to a different aspect of the Critical Anthology.

  • 50 marks
  • 20% of A level
  • assessed by teachers
  • moderated by AQA

In practice

If you decide to choose to write about a prose text with Mrs Ludford, you must write about a poetry text with me, and vice versa.

You write an essay linked to Marxism with Mrs Ludford, and an essay linked to Feminism with me.

The AOs

You must hit each AO in both essays.

You have been given the mark scheme.

You are assessed according to which level you meet each AO.

Use the mark scheme when you are writing. There are no smoke and mirrors; we have given you everything you need to write two essays, to a high standard.

Starting the process

Blogs

So I can keep track of your reading, research and what you are learning as a result, you are going to keep a blog, tracking your process.

You will post what you are reading about your chosen text, and what you are learning from that reading, on your blog.

I will set tasks and mini-deadlines for these posts, and you will meet them, so I can look over your work and provide guidance and support.

Your reading and research

I am expecting you to independently read your chosen text, making annotations as you go.

You then need to read critical essays regarding your text. You should post these to your blog, with explanations of what you have learned from your reading.

The idea is that this is academic research. NO 'gumf and bumf' off Wikepedia.

The NEA process

So far...

You have explored feminist theories and applied them to some short stories from The Bloody Chamber.

Therefore, you have a grasp of some of the basic theories and ideas that form feminist criticism. You also have in depth knowledge of at least two texts from the book.

You have also studied two poems with me, and as a class.

The rules and the process

Teachers need to supervise the process.

You are encourged to work independently, with support from me.

AQA rules. You must not:

  • submit work that is not yours;
  • lend work to other students;
  • allow other students use of your independently sourced material;
  • include work copied from books, the internet or other sources without acknowledgement in your essay;
  • submit work that is written/word processed by a third-party without acknowledgement;
