GRAIN

Diagetic/non diagetic sound:

GRAIN stands for genre, representation, audience, institution and narrative. Grain is a useful technique when analysing the typical movie poster conventions, for instance for one to understand how basic movie conventions are made to show the purpose the movie is trying to gain they must know how to pick apart the poster using grain. Genre is a fairly simple part of grain to understand, one must be able to recognize the genre of a film by looking at the poster of the film. Representation is basically what the movie is trying to represent about a certain issue e.g. how teenager may be seen in society. Audience is just when one is able to recognise who the movie is aimed at. Institution tells us the organisation that may have produced the film. Narrative explores the story of a text.

Diagetic and non diagetice sounds are crucial in films and adverts as it can sometimes create a much greater and even different meaning. Diagetic sounds are the natural sounds that would be heard by the actors and yourself if you were also in the room, this gives the film or advert a personal feeling as it seems more realistic. Non diegetic sounds are the added sounds that are included to create suspense or different meaning to a scene these sounds include, music and voice overs.

Mise-en-scene:

When looking at mise-en-scene one must consider such aspects like; the background of a particular extract, setting, lighting, costume, props, facial expressions, body language, etc. The term is borrowed from a French theatrical expression, meaning roughly “put into the scene”. Mise-en-scene describes the objects in a particular frame and gives meaning to the extract as a whole. By analysing the Mise-en-scene one is able to see understanding of an extract whether that be of a scene in a film or a movie poster, we are able to construct the meaning through the Mise-en-scene used.
