Introduction to the
Spiritual Disciplines
But He also treats us a corporate entity - in that much of the gospel is written to the collective, rather than the individual.

Scripture
Ps 42: 1 - 2
As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
Ps 84: 1 - 4
How lovely is your dwelling place,
O LORD Almighty!
2 My soul yearns, even faints,
for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and my flesh cry out
for the living God.
3 Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
O LORD Almighty, my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
they are ever praising you.

Mark 1 : 35
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
Luke 5 : 15 - 17
Yet the news about him spread all the more, so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.
Spiritual Disciplines are the tools whereby our inner worlds are settled, quietened, healed and ordered by God, so that our outer worlds can take shape and congruency. And shaped and congruent outer worlds, like individual birds flying in formation, become how we act out our corporate calling.
SOLITUDE + SILENCE
The prayer of silence is not about quieting external sounds. Instead it is about quieting the inner noise in our minds. There are all kinds of voices rattling around inside us, battling for our attention.
Confession
As soon as Adam and Eve had taken and eaten the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, their eyes were opened, and they became aware of their nakedness. Their first impulse was to put some clothes on, to conceal themselves, to hide in a way, from one another. Next they hid in the trees from God.
