We decided to use teenager's within our film because they stereotypically go against the law and like to try and get up to all sorts of mysterious thing's, such as going into abandoned buildings. Despite this being a negative stereotype because not all teenagers are rebellious, it almost shows a message to them 'don't trespass as bad things could happen'. We also decided not to use adults because teenagers are more naitve and would do immature things to get a reaction where as stereotypically adults are more mature and sensible therefore wouldn't be rebellious and do dangerous things. In the film 'Final Destination' the teenagers get into trouble because they interfere with fate, this is simular to our storyline.
Within the friendship group we have 3 white characters and 1 black character. The black character adheres the stereotype because he comes up with the idea of going into the bunker, his rebellious behavior is a stereotype for black characters especially those within their youth years. The female white character adheres the stereotype too because not only is she a female therefore thinking of all the negatives but shes a white character realizing the danger within the act. The other 2 white characters follow, because the black character is so rebellious the other 2 white character follow him as if they are scared of the consequences if they didn't follow him.
In our film we decided to have a friendship group which was made up of 3 males and 1 female. We decided to only have one female as she appears as more vulnerable within her group. She is smaller than the males and because she is outnumbered she appears to be quite weak and depends on her male friends for support. This adheres the stereotype that the female character is weak however it slightly adheres the stereotype because she is the only female in the group and stereotypically females have at least one best friend.
We subvert the stereotype that males are braver as when the long shot is used the 3 males are running away from the bunker and the female isn't seen. This shows that even though they were up for going into the bunker at the beginning the scary has scared them off and they run away. Even though not many other films use a friendship group like this we wanted to have this group to look a bit more unique.
In pre production planning we decided on our characters to follow stereotypical teenage conventions. We came up with possible ideas however we needed to decided on an image for our antagonist/ ghost. We decided we wanted to use make-up to make her look more scary and more of a threat to the other characters in the film therefore we researched examples of scary movie make-up which gave us to our outcome. We used the scary puppet from Saw as an inspiration for the make up as we liked the concept of the usual and creepy face, the make-up builds suspense which is a thriller convention. The puppet in saw is a male therefore for a female to have on this male make-up subverts the stereotype. However, men are stereotypically seen as more dominant and powerful therefore for the female to have this make up increases her power.
What's this about?
As a team we decided to subvert and adhere many stereotypes and conventions of thriller films. Using personailites, dender, race and age this short prezzi will explain some of our choses. The majority of our choses where made during the editing process therefore look back through my blog to find them.
