On February 4th 1916 he signed up for the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force. He was deemed medically fit for general service and was ranked as a lieutenant, because of his 10 years of basic training.

Timeline
Tait went to school at Laurieknowe Public School in Dumfries, Scotland. There is now a certificate hanging in the school to commemorate Tait's noble actions.
In Maxwelltown, Dumfries, Scotland on May 27th 1888, James Edward Tait, the 2nd child to James Brydon Tait and Mary Johnstone Tait was born.
In 1906, when Tait was 18 he started training. In total, he trained for 10 years. His training included:
5 years of imperial training
In 1911, when Tait was 23 he moved to Winnipeg, Ontario,
1 year in a squadron
4 years in regimental sooute
In November 1915, Tait signed up to be apart of the 100th Winnipeg Grenadiers.
Tait sailed from Canada on September 18th 1916. He was heading to Britain to get prepared for war.
He worked there as a civil engineer.
The Battle of Amiens
The last battle that Tait
will live to see. On August
8 1918 The Battle of
Amiens Began. That day
he led his company
through Beaucourt Ridge.
There were multiple
machine guns but a hidden
one caused endless
casualties. Tait grabbed a
rifle and a bayonet and dashed forward alone. He killed the enemies machine gunner. This inspired many other soldiers to push forward and fight. They captured 12 machine guns and 20 prisoners.
On August 11th 1918, Captain James Edward Tait continued leading his men forward. A bomb fell in front of him and the shell flew up, severely injuring him. He continued to lead his men till death.
On April 1st 1917, Tait was reported wounded.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge (April 9th-12th.) - Tait served as a lieutenant helping his company advance. He was shot in the knee. He earned the military cross in this battle for gallant actions.
The Battle of Passchendale Ridge (July 31-November 10 1917) Tait was promoted to Captain.
