The Origination
Interestingly enough, the concept of burglar alarms dates back thousands of years to a time when dogs were used to warn humans of an intruder like today’s burglar.
Their barking was the alarms that alerted the people around them that something may be amiss.
After a while, people began using chimes as burglar alarms.
Today, these security systems have become extremely elaborate thanks to technological advances and innovations.

Major Innovations
- The American Telephone and Telegraph Company bought the Holmes Burglar business in 1905 with linking it to emergency call systems for inviting police and fire fighting personnel.
- After World War II, they became less expensive and more versatile for use in 1980s, and by the middle of 1990s the system has become a standard feature
- In 1970s, the alarm systems were equipped with motion detectors.
- Then wireless system came. In the most advanced technology, the use of motion detectors, surveillance equipment and electronic tracking devices are being used.
Electric Alarms
Edwin Holmes began manufacturing the first electric burglar alarms in the early 1850s. Holmes built upon the technology originally created by Augustus Pope. Holmes obtained Pope's patent rights and began to expand upon the invention by adding a bell to the system to alert homeowners when a door or window was opened.
Bell Alarms
Mr. Tildesley, an English inventor was the first to come out with an acceptable model of a burglar alarm. He mechanically linked some bells with the door lock and made the system to ring when someone touched or tried to open the locks.
