Why are we here?

(Why are you here?)

It sounds simple...

Let's talk about money

(What stakeholders are interested in net revenue?)

There are conflicts of interest!

Who is putting pressure on the schedule leverscape?

Teachers

Students

Administration

Prospective families

Board of Trustees

Parents

Digging for goals:

Scheduling committee principles

Faculty survey

Institutional core values

Attributed goals

The

leverscape

tells

us

where

we

could

should

can't

shan't

go.

80-20 Rule: Let's spend most of our time on the most important goals.

Stakeholders will DO THINGS to get what they want.

(What levers could your stakeholders pull to resolve conflicts themselves?)

Fuel for discussion: quantifiable charactaristics of each model

A real-world example:

  • An institution identifies a need for change in their scheduling model.

  • Several models are advanced through proponents.

  • Model charactaristics are difficult to quantify.

  • Debate is intense, ongoing, and debilitating.

The analytical result:

A strong consensus emerged supporting

the semester based model.

The (admittedly problematic) schedule was retained.

The resulting change

The leverscape of stakeholder goals.

What they want puts pressure on your plan.

Lots of pressure.

Why do we care what they think?

Exclusivity of goals.

Epilogue

Two years later, they revived the discussion

Re-reviewing the prior analysis, they quickly

decided to implement the semester model.

This is their third year in semesters.

There is no significant pressure to consider

other scheduling models.

Question:

How can we map goals and find solutions?

Answer:

Creatively.

Thoughtfully.

Courageously.

Completely.

Transparently.

What do they care about?

Assessment and Planning

(Who are the stakeholders

for *your* problem?)

Is everyone in the room?

Absent doesn't mean unaware.

Adding it all up.
