Notes From Underground, is set in 1860's St. Petersburg in Russia. It is about "the underground man". A character archetype which was created in and named after this novel, but has became a mainstay of existential literarture ever since. We never learn our protagonists name, but he is generally reffered to as Underground Man. The book is divided into two parts, the first part contains a series of diary entries of the narrator at the age of forty, in which he explains the theories of his anatagonistic view of society. The second part is set earlier in the 1840's, it recounts a series of events which are pivotal in defining the man and his views.
