FILM NOIR
Attracting my audience
Forms and Conventions
improvements shown
and my strengths
weakness in our
continuity task
sound
antagonist and
protagonist
There were a number of improvements
we made to our media which included :
the lighting - at first when we shot our film noir
it was way too dark so we went out again and re-filmed
a few scenes with better lighting and better weather.
Another improvement was not making our clips to repetetive,
we improved this by making the clips flow so it didn't look like
they were just jumping from clip to clip.
We also took out one of our 2 clips of the gun, Our teacher Ms Humpleby
said it would look much better if we just had one clip of the gun so the audience
do not expect it.
the main weakness in our
continuity task was our angles and
filming, the shots we were filming were
very boring and they all looked the same.
Our plot also was quite hard to understand,
you can see that the idea was that
the main character
is getting followed and at the end
they meet the villian but after that
you wonder what has happend as it
doesn't show what has happend.
Deconstructing
Film
The sound in a typical Film Noir
is low undertone sounds which are
not over powering. The sound in a film
noir is used to create suspense.
In our Film Noir we used music from a Jazz
CD which we used to create a old fashioned
atmosphere, we also used a sound clip from Imovie
to go underneath the soundtrack to create Mystery,
it was a low un-nerving sound.
i think the sound in a Film Noir really sets the scene and
is very important when making a Film Noir
The ways the audience will identify who the protagonist and antagonist is, is the protagonist is obvious from the start chloe ( the femme fatale) is the main character, we follow her journey to when shes meeting her victim or 'prey'.
The antagonist is the man because he is powerless.

process
organisational tips
Throughout my media project i have been keeping a blog where i have posted my progress when making Our Film Noir.

opening title sequence
To keep our media project
well organised we asigned
eachother roles in the group.
Lydia was the producer, Daisy was the
editor and i was the director.
That way we could cover more work in less
time and keep on top of things.
An Opening Title Sequence is the beginning of the film, including credits and/or a piece of film to introduce. It has to have credits and the introduction of main character(s). It introduces the film, the plot, the characters and it is to set the scene and style and hook you into the film. It benefits the audience to help them understand what the film is about and give them first impressions about what they think of the film/characters.
Titles of many film noirs often reflected the nature or tone of the style of
the Film Noir. They set the scene and also sets you up for the film.
Distribution and
exchange
We distributed our film
by showing it to the whole of our media class, another way of distributing that we could of done was advertising.
my media project
Representation of social groups
the locations we chose for our film
noir were, a bathroom where the audience
see the femme fatale getting ready to go and meet the protagonist. The second location is set on a long street where she walks to meet him and meets him under a old fashioned lamp post.
Audiences
in our film noir we used the character
called 'femme fatale' which are used typically
in classic film noirs.
they are known for their seductive looks and ways,
conventions of a femme fatale are dark hair, red lipstick,
porcelin skin and black dresses with killer high heels!
we wanted to encorporate all of these conventions for our
femme fatale in our film noir and used all these things to get the
'classic' look.
The audience only meets the 'hero'
once in the film noir but is introduced to him
straight away via text message so we know that he is
part of the film. A typical film noir hero is a man, usually a wealthy business man
who has his fair share of women.
A example of a film noir hero would be Daniel Craig - James Bond.
CRITICAL THEORIES
market testing
Representation
Semiotics
Audience types
We represented our social
group to young adults/teens
as the characters are in that age range
and although it is a Film Noir it has props and locations which represent the modern age today for example - the gun.
To get opinions of our
film from people we aimed our
film at we showed it to a class of
media students who then gave us
postive feedback.
Semiotics, also known as semiotic studies or semiology or signification and communication, signs and symbols, and is usually divided into three branches:
Semantics: Relation between signs and the things to which they refer; their denotata
Syntactics: Relations among signs in formal structures
Pragmatics: Relation between signs and their effects on those (people) who use them.
Semiotics are known as 'the study of signs'.

users and gradification
in media we learnt about all different types of audiences. it is very important to identify with the type of audience you are aiming at as it will help you a lot more because you wouldn't aim a action movie at someone who didn't watch them as you would loose out on money, so knowing who you are aiming at will increase views ect...
Audiences are divided into 3 differnt catorgories; traditionalists, post modernists and headonists.
A tradionalist means that they stick to what they know, they are traditional they would go and watch a Disney film because they know the outcome and they know what to expect.
a post modernist is very much like a headonist but doesnt turn up to the cinema completly unaware of what they are going to watch, a post modernist will mostly watch Action films.
lastly a headonist will take extreame risks, they will turn up to the cinema and just pick a film at random and go watch it, headonists are mostly likely to go see horror films or gorey films.

The acorn system is also another way of indenifying a audience,
the acorn system divides people into differnt catorgories for example; A, B, C1, C2, D and E.
the people in A are the very rich people for example, bill gates, the queen, simon cowell ect..
group B is people who are lawyers, surgeons, solicitors( very clever people), group C1 is company managers, big bosses.
Group C2 is the working class - people who work in shops, offiices.
Group D is factory workers and Group E are those who are unemployed , pensioners and students.
for my media i
have made this online
presentation to show my
evaluation of my project.
Technologies and
constructing my film
learning to upload
learning how to
use the resources
in our group we devised 2 A3
sized pieces of paper and brainstormed
ideas for our film.
Using the resources was
straight forward for myself,
Lydia and Daisy because we had all done media
in year 10 and 11,
we knew how to edit on Imovie and
how to use the camera properly.
for our film noir we used
Imovie to edit our film.
meeting my
audiences needs
To meet our audiences needs
we created a survey to see what people
we targetted at (12 +) would like to see in a film
noir.
