PLASTICS IN THE FOOD CHAIN

SOME DATA

BPA IN PLASTIC BOTTLES

One of the most harmful substances contained in plastic bottles is BPA, an endocrine disruptor. An experiment showed that high levels of BPA are released when the bottles are exposed to boiling water.

In 2008 in the United States were used:

- 780.000 tons of plastic plates and cups

- 2.680.000 tons of PET bottles and jars

PLASTIC

- it is an organic material

- it takes from 100 to 1000 years to biodegrade

-it isn't usually recycled

Plastics absorb oily toxins (PCBs and DDE) from the surrounding water. This means we are poisoning fish.

PLASTIC IN SEAFOOD

Japanese researchers suggest that plastic is a transporter of toxic chemicals into the marine food chain.

The potential threat of our plastic waste to humans eating at the top of the food chain is obvious.

Two things are clear:

-our oceans are polluted by plastic trash because of human negligence

- we will eat everything we throw into the sea
