How we got our actors

Research

Or group looked at many different types of characters before we decided to choose the type of actors we wanted. We looked at many films e.g. adulthood. We thought that the characters were too aggressive and violent to be the type of character we needed. We then looked at other movies e.g. About a boy; it was at this point that we realised that we needed good actors in order for our film to look realistic in order for the topic of grief to be portrayed correctly.

Problem

We decided that it would be too difficult to get a young boy off school for two days, so we made him 17 because A-level students usually have many free periods and they are easily accessible for us. Making the child older meant that it would be more difficult for us to find an older woman, because that group isn’t as easily assessable.

So what did we do?

I posted an ad on Gumtree, which is a website that can be used to advertise job vacancies ect. I outlined where the job will take place, the advantages of taking the job and what times they would be expected to work for. The job is voluntary. We don’t really care about the ethnicity of the actor because it will be quite easy for us to find a 6th former to match their ethnicity. I have also posted the link on Facebook for the Gumtree add asking people to contact me if they know anyone who will be able to act in our film.

Timeline

We were expecting our search for actors to take a while because we thought people would only do it if they were paid.

What if all else fails?

One of our group members has already got someone in mind to play the role of the mum, but she might be too young and she is very busy working in the west end. If our ad on Gumtree fails we can always pay money for a feature add that will make our ad more popular because it will be seen more.

Winning method!

I have also made an add on a website called Starnow and they post the ads of people searching for other actors and they also advertise actors looking for work. Posting an ad on this website will hopefully help us find an actor quicker. Starnow is a very popular website. Thanks to this we now have someone who can definitely do it because they have responded to our add. We currently have 13 volunteers for the role of Sarah and 8 volunteers for the role of Max. It was very simple and easy to find and we got a high response rate. There was also a lot of people who looked at my listing of the roles, so it made my second listing more noticeable because many people were clicking on my page.

Although the video is a bit of a spoof it does explain what starnow is and how popular they are
