Properties of Water

1. Water is a Polar Molecule

A molecule with electrically charged areas

The negative oxygen sticks to the positive hydrogen

2. Surface Tension

the tightness across water caused by the attraction between polar molecules

Pulls water into a curved shape

Tightness across surface of water caused by polar molecules pulling on each other

3. Capillary Action

  • When the polar molecules of water are attracted to surrounding molecules lifting water against the force of gravity

This allows water to be "sticky" and get wicked away through fabrics

Water

1. Household purposes

cleaning

bathing

cooking

Uses

it takes 430 liters of water to make a loaf of bread

2. Agriculture

(farming)

Irrigation (watering) uses more water than anything else in the USA

3. Industry/PowerPlants

Used to make products, cool machinery

The continuous process where water moves through the living and non-living parts of the environment

Water Cycle

shipping has determined the placement of many major cities

4. Transportation

Precipitation - once drops get too heavy, they fall back to earth

  • Condensation - water cooling in the atmosphere changes back to liquid
  • This forms clouds
  • Evaporation - Water near the earth's surface warms and turns to gas water vapor
  • Transpiration - water is given off through plants' leaves
  • Collection - water can then...
  • evaporate
  • fall into water body
  • be used by organisms
  • seep into groundwater
  • A single birch tree can give off 260 liters in a day
