Pemulwuy

Early Life

He was born in 1750 near Botany Bay. He was from the Darug people and his name meant earth. He lived with the British for 6 months before he started to fight with them.

What did he look like? He had a bad eye and a club foot. In his culture, having a foot like that meant that he was a clever man.

Why did he start fighting? He started fighting because he thought that Govenor Phillip's gamekeeper had killed some aboriginal people. So he killed this man. He fought the British for 12 long years.

His head was cut off and sent to England where it remains today. Sir Joseph Banks said he was a brave and fierce warrior.

Pemulwuy was shot many times. This made the Darug people believe that guns could not kill him. On May 1st 1801 Governor Phillip issued a proclamation that he was to be shot on sight and offered a reward.

Charlotte leaving Portsmouth (England) May 1787.
