He worked as a doctor on board several ships before establishing his own medical practice. He continued as a doctor until 1891, when he decided to devote all of his time to writing. He wrote prolifically for most of his life, and also involved himself in other activities, including family life and politics. He died peacefully in 1930.
There have been many adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, including other books, plays, movies, and TV shows.
Sherlock Holmes is by far the most popular character created by Doyle. Holmes is a detective known for his incredible intelligence, memory, powers of deduction, and detached personality. Holmes was popular during Doyle's lifetime, and continues to be a popular character today.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes would not be as enjoyable or effective without a strong cast of supporting characters. The most important character, other than Holmes himself, is Dr. John Watson. Watson serves as Holmes's sidekick, assistant, friend, and conscience. Watson is also the character who actually tells the stories.
Other characters include characters like Moriarty, Holmes's arch-enemy.
