Creating a brand: vintage aged theme within our video meant that the ancillary texts
couldn't look too modernised, and I had this problem with a draft I made. The duplicate theme
was also toyed with in the brand along with the idea of Hewitson's star image
The image manipulation of the duplicate theme had to be subtle and not too computerized, due to our 'aged' theme
Having just Hewitson on the CD cover and magazine advert relates to
his selfish nature in the video, adding to his self-obsessed star image and
the idea of his fame and success
The effect of the star image is that
the target audience will connect more with the artist and the artist will be more involved in the media, for instance interviews/posters in music magazines, which is an important method of promotion. It also encourages Laura Mulvey's male gaze, which contributed towards Hewitson's respected image in the media
When promoting Hewitson's products, it is important to reach his target audience. This includes both a young audience of the indie/alternative genre, and an older audience because of the links with the eighties within his music. The rural and old-fashioned mise en scene in the music video also relate to his older audience, with the visually interesting effects to appeal to the younger audience
The 'Bigmouth Strikes Again' music video would be shown on mainstream channels such as T4, because they have a respected image, and is a channel that focusses on a range of music genres. Other channels would include the genre specific channel 'Kerrang!' because it targets an audience that's musical preference is rock/indie/alternative. However music channels such as this are usually watched by the younger generation, which is why mainstream channels such as T4 would be a good way to target the older audience.
Hewitson's digipack would be found in music stores such as HMV & Powerplay, as these stores are popular among the young and old sides of Hewitson's target audience. To make Hewitson's digipack stand out on the shelves, it uses the harsh contrast of black and white, which also fits into the vintage and aged style of Hewitson River, and a subtle grain was added over the image to achieve this. The image manipulation of the duplicate makes the digipack stand out because it is more eye-catching than just a standard image on the CD cover. The simplistic look of the cover with the white space, makes the large bold text stand out, drawing attention to Hewitson's name, adding to his importance and his star persona.
The magazine advertisement for Hewitson's digipack also has the issue of reaching both the older and younger sides of his target audience. For the younger side, magazines such as NME, Q, Kerrang! and more independent music magazines such as Spin would be sufficient to advertise in because of the audience they attract and the appropriate music genre that they support. As they are well respected magazines, featuring Hewitson's advert in them would create more of a hype about the digipack. The advert was also made black and white to stand out in the pages of a magazine, the same as the CD cover, with bold text and a simplistic feel.
The effect of having a very similar digipack and magazine advert is that it creates a brand and a memorable image among the target audience. They relate to the video in terms of the image of Hewitson being self-centered and selfish
