Editing Software: (Also known as non-linear)
It can be used to make footage smoother, add cuts, titles, credits. The advantage of this is that the audience do not notice the cuts in filming, a disadvantage is that the software can be expensive making the production costs rise. There were 24 editing software programmes used to create James Camerons Avatar, for example, Avid (also used by BBC), Autodesk Maya and Luxology modo.
CGI: (Computer Generated Imagery)
CGI was first used in 1973 in WestWorld. It is used in stunts and to make animations look more realistic, for example Toy Story 3, Cars 2 and Avatar. All the work is created on computers with the latest editing software, making the animations seem real; this is used in many Hollywood films and computer games. CGI used in the film, Avatar, there were 13 programmes used; Weta Digital was used for most of the work, including character modelling, animation and rendering.

Cameras:
In 1999 the film of a camera developed from 35mm to digital; this meant that the films per second increased from 24 fps to 68 fps. Digital cameras make the film easier to upload to a computer for post-production editing, it also means the picture will be clearer and better quality as technology progresses, for example reducing motion blur and increasing clarity. In 2009, two films were filmed using 4K on the RED ONE camera, The Knowing and District 9, Social Network was also filmed using this camera in 2010.
HD/iMax: (Hi-definition filming)
The largest iMax cinema (3D cinema) is 8 stories high in Hollywood, this is used to show the latest Hollywood 3D films. HD television has recently been introduced in the UK, this means Blu-Ray DVD players have become more popular in households. Hi-definition ensures that the image will be clearer and better quality, a Blu-Ray player or HD television simply enchances the quality further. In June 2006 the first seven Blu-Ray films were released, 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, Underworld: Evolution, xXx and The Terminator.
