Introduction to Waves

What is a wave?

What different types of wave can you make?

If the wave requires a medium- it is a mechanical wave.

Two types of waves

Mechanical and Electromagnetic

Transverse waves

The wave vibrates through the medium at a right angle or perpendicular to the direction the wave travels.

A disturbance involving the transfer of energy from place to place.

*Remember that energy is the ability to do work*

Electromagnetic waves do not require a medium to travel through but longitudinal

waves do.

What do you think of when you think of waves?

Key words

Waves

Energy

Medium

Mechanical waves

Transverse waves

Longitudinal Waves

Frequency

Amplitude

Longitudinal Waves- the medium vibrates in the same direction the wave travels.

What is the energy transferring through?

The medium is the material the wave is traveling through.

Frequency- the number of waves per second

Amplitude- height of the wave

Volume and Pitch
