Power (Part 2)

Presidential Power

Executive Order-

This power was being expanded upon because he made a bold move that impacted the nation s a whole in a time of war. Lincoln used this power to make a very large decision without the consent of Congress.

Power of Persuasion-

War Measure

The Moral War

Power (Part 1)

Constitutional Basis

  • Lincoln made it clear that he was going to do anything he could so save the Union.

  • The decision to keep slaves was based on the condition of the Union.

  • Very few people saw slavery as a moral evil, but more of a political one.

  • People thought that it gave the South an unfair economic advantage. There was also the question of having slavery expanded to the Western states.

  • There was always the threat that slavery would "split America in half"

  • Ben Franklin called it an "atrocious debasement of human nature".

However, there was more concern over creating an enduring Constitution and Union rather than abolishing slavery
