London is the cultural centre of England, where you can find a lot of museums, galleries, and other places of interest. The city is especially famous for its theatres which stage a great amount of performances. One of the most popular of them is the MUSICAL

Musical theatre is a form of theatre combining songs, spoken dialogue, acting, and dance. The emotional content of the piece – humor, pathos, love, anger – as well as the story itself, is communicated through the words, music, movement and technical aspects of the entertainment.

These are the most well-known musical theatres of London:

Her Majesty's Theatre is a West End theatre, in Haymarket. The theatre was established by architect and playwright John Vanbrugh, in 1705. The name of the theatre changes with the sex of the monarch. It first became the King's Theatre in 1714 on the accession of George I. It was renamed Her Majesty's Theatre in 1837.

The Gielgud Theatre is a West End theatre, at the corner of Rupert Street. The theatre opened on December 27, 1906 as the Hicks Theatre. Designed in Louis XVI style, the theatre originally had 970 seats, but over the years boxes and other seats have been removed. In 1994 the theatre was renamed in honour of British actor John Gielgud.

The Queen's Theatre is a West End theatre located in the City of Westminster. It opened on 8 October 1907. Originally there was an idea to call it the Central Theatre. The theatre was called the Queen's after some debate and a portrait of Queen Alexandra was hung above the fireplace in the grand entrance foyer.

Les Misérables is a musical by Claude-Michel Schönberg, based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo. Set in early 19th-century France, the plot follows the stories of many characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution. It is the longest-running musical in the West End, celebrating its 25 Anniversary in 2010.

The Lion King is a musical based on the 1994 Disney animated film of the same name with music by Elton John. It features actors in animal costumes as well as giant, hollow puppets. The show is produced by Disney Theatrical. With a cast of over 40 actors, singers and dancers the musical tells the story of young Simba's epic adventures becoming king.

Let's have a look at some of the

musicals staged in London:

Legally Blonde is a musical based on the novel Legally Blonde by Amanda Brown and the 2001 film of the same name. It tells the story of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who enrolls at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner. She discovers how her knowledge of the law can help others, and successfully defends exercise queen Brooke Wyndham in a murder trial. The show began a UK tour in 2011 and has had more success in the UK than it has in the USA.

The Phantom of the Opera is a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on the French novel “Le Fantôme de l'Opéra” by Gaston Leroux. The central plot revolves around a beautiful soprano, Christine Daaé, who becomes the obsession of a mysterious, disfigured musical genius.

In the end Elphaba and Galinda overcome

their rivalry and become friends again.

The story is told from the perspective of the witches of the Land of Oz: Elphaba, the misunderstood girl with emerald-green skin, and Galinda, the beautiful, ambitious and popular blonde. Wicked tells the story in which these two unlikely friends grow to become the Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch of the North.

Wicked is a musical based on the novels “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, “The Wizard of Oz” and “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”. Since its 2003 debut, Wicked has broken box office records around the world and also set the record for the biggest West End opening in London.
