What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Our Audience

How We Got Feedback

We have taken feedback from a wide range of people over the past few months which has led to doing more and more drafts until eventually we got our polished final pieces.

The video is so different to how we ever imagined and this is through changing it to fit the audiences comments.

Audience feedback is of paramount importance and absolutely vital when creating a product, gaining feedback is the best way to refine your product so that its fit to the audience. It gives an honest opinion of what works and what doesn't and this is incredibly helpful to get different perspectives on your products because sometimes when you're making the product you don't notice its flaws and what you need is for someone to just say No that isn't working.

Our primary audience was males in the 15 - 24 age bracket as we were trying to re brand the Nine Inch Nails we wanted to appeal to a younger audience.

For this audience for the magazine advert we would plan to advertise in music magazine 'Kerrang!' This magazine is aimed at our core target audience

Our secondary audience were again males but this time in an older age bracket 25 - 34. This age category would be the ages of existing NIN fans who were fans of the band in the 90's but they have aged since then from being in 15- 24 now to the later age category. We are trying to look to create a product that also appeals to existing fans ( our secondary audience ) as well as the younger audience who arent necessarily existing NIN fans. For the magazine advert we would advertise in the magazine 'Q' as this magazine has the same audience as us.

There were many different ways we gathered feedback, one being showcasing our work to a class full of media students who were also making a music video so knew the codes and conventions and were able to offer us a very critical response to our products. This was perhaps the best way to get feedback because we managed to get alot of valid feedback in a short space of time as the footage was showed to the whole class.

We got feedback from our teacher who offered a very critical and professional approach and had the media knowledge to determine what was working and what wasn't.

It was also good to get feedback from people who didn't know much about media and offered a basic review of the products and what they didn't like or did like.

We also used social sites and new media like Facebook and Twitter to gather feedback online from Nine Inch Nails fans and also we posted our work on a Nine Inch Nails fan site forum. This was great because we got good feedback from people who were in our target audience.

After researching a lot into the industrial metal genre we could see what the target audience was.

Audience is usually divided into age, gender and social class, it is very important when creating a product to get a good understanding of the audience, and what codes and conventions they would be looking for.

So once you get a better understanding of your audience you know what to include in your product and what will appeal to them.

We found that after research into the genre it was alot more popular amongst males than females, this is largely down to the fact that industrial metal genre is infact just a sub genre of the larger Metal genre which is usually affiliated with a more male audience because of the live performances and gigs being very heavy and full of people jumping around, head banging and moshing and very testosterone fuelled, things can get quite physical with mosh pits and walls of death which most femine women would not like to participate in this is very different to genres like Pop which have a higher female fanbase.

Video Footage Feedback

Magazine Advert Feedback

Digipak Feedback

We were also lucky enough to get feedback from a forum administrator of a NIN fansite who fit into our secondary audience a 25 - 34 year old existing Nine Inch Nails fan. This was great to get feedback by someone who really new the genre and especially Nine Inch Nails.

Over the past few months we produced 5 different Rough cuts and got feedback on all of them. Here is the feedback we got.

The first time we showed our work to others was at the schools creative art's evening, this was an evening put on by school showcasing work from the media, drama and music department and was full of creative minds who could offer helpful feedback about our product, we were even lucky enough to have the headteacher view our work which was a great honour.

The feedback we got from creative arts evening:

People didn't really know what was going on, there wasnt any anchorage that gave the audience an idea of what was happening in the video and why and what our character was trying to escape from and what relevance did all the shots of Mac's and other miscellaneous objects have to do with this.

How we will change our product after the feedback:

We think the main reason people didn't know what was going on was because the footage we showed them was only 45 seconds long which really isn't that long to provide any real anchorage especially with our idea that 'Technology is Bad' it is hard to portray that in such a short clip so we think that we will just have to work on getting more footage and then getting more feedback to see whether with more time the audience got a better understanding of what was going on.

We also showed our work in our Media lesson which is full of young talented minds ready to make their break in the music video world, so is good to get other media students to give their creative opinions on our work.

We also created different drafts for our Magazine Advert as we also needed to make sure this product was fit for its purpose.

The Mag Ad feedback received was that it was overall very good. However elements such as the font used seemed unusual and not as varied as it could be.

Replace the URL's with just icons- they're generally familiar with everyone.

  • Good enigma / lack of exposition- it looks obscure and in keeping with the Nine Inch Nails 'tone'. The intentionally polysemic enigma codes fit in with the video.
  • The beware CCTV looks good and fits to the theme of surveillance.
  • Framing of the candle seems to be good- fits with theme of the genre
  • Some of the blending between images (the solid lines between them)
  • Change position of the date and put it amongst the pics in bottom half, and use a different font

Feedback from Facebook

  • Font use is messy and a bit clumsy: lacks font variation, and text not well thought out

Like for both the video and Magazine advert the Digipak also required alot of different drafts until it was finished.

Feedback gained on the digipak suggested that the design was good but it was some of the small details that let it down, things like not being able to read the track list on the back.

Feedback:

Front Panel

  • Add sticker to the front promoting Bonus DVD
  • Change the font of the album name

Rear Panel

  • Change the text on the rear so that all tracks can be clearly seen
  • Add copyright info instead of just NIN web adress
  • Replace QR code with bar code.

  • Spine
  • Add serial number to the spine

  • Inner:
  • Add more detailed copyright info
  • Add track lengths
  • Add information on Bonus DVD
  • Ditch the HBK logo bottom right, and replace with tour dates.
  • Twitter /Facebook should be NIN + not HBK. T @NIN

Feedback we got from our Target Audience:

Include more subliminal messages

Perhaps get the character to get on the train, this would give us scope to go to new locations

The fast pace editing was good gave an intense feel to the video

Good use of effects, thought that the Black and White effect worked well.

Expand locations to more urban areas such as Leeds and mainly Bradford.

How we adapted: We found new locations more industrial locations to film in and we also included more shots of the Illuminati eye

Feedback from our media teacher:

The scene when Ben walks backwards should be changed because it gave a comedy feel, which wasn't all what we were wanting.

Didn't think that Ben was right for the role.

How we adapted to feedback from teacher:

We edited out the backwards walking scene to make sure we have the correct intentions for our video.

How we Adapted to Feedback

We took on all of these points and changed the magazine advert accordingly by adding and refining things that were and wernt on the first draft this feedback was simple and easy to follow and meant that we ended up with a magazine advert that fit the codes and conventions of Magazine Adverts

What we learned

Ultimately after taking in the feedback from everyone over the project you realise that it is vital, and without it you would not have good products.

You realise that you probably will never get a perfect product because everyones feedback is different but you just have to make sure that you have a product that is as good as you can make it by constantly re doing drafts and rough cuts to in the end have a product which fits its purpose and also appeals to the target audience.
