“School” comes from the Greek word school, meaning leisure. Greek boys (not girls) started going to school at the age of six or seven . The school was called a gymnasium. Children who attended school were the sons of wealthy freemen and lessons had to be paid for. Boys from poorer families either didn’t go to school or left at a young age.
The Ancient Greeks believed that education should enrich the body and the mind and turn people into model citizens. So schoolboys had lessons in citizenship as well as reading, writing, dancing, singing, music and sports.
According to the famous philosopher, Aristotle, Greek schoolchildren had to take their learning seriously. He wrote: “Education certainly ought not to be a means of amusement. Young people are not playing when they are learning, because all learning is painful.”
Greek girls did not go to school. They were taught at home by their mothers and learned to cook, sew and look after the house.
