The GNU License

The GPL

A General Publishing License

What is a GNU License?

A GNU license aka GNU General Public License (GPL) is a free software license that gives users the freedom to share and change previous versions of a program but prevent it from being turned into proprietary software.

What does that mean?

When? Where?

September 27, 1983, by Richard Stallman at MIT.

A GNU License is often represented as a GNU.

Using the GNU GPL will require that all the released improved versions be free software. This means you can avoid the risk of having to compete with a proprietary modified version of your own work. However, in some special situations it can be better to use a more permissive license.

Breaking the law

Since the GPL is a copyright license, the copyright holders of the software are the ones who have the power to enforce the GPL. But, since it is a GENRAL PUBLIC license, there isn't really any major penalties. Maybe small fees depending on what you did.
