The Invasive species in the Rivers from Romania

Lives in small rivers and warm, calm lakes or ponds .

It is a bottom predator that feeds on insects, larvae, worms, small crustaceans, fish eggs and smaller fish.

Native spreading area

In Europe, the pumpkinseed is considered an invasive species

Could outcompete existing fish

Can disturb, through aggression, the natural behaviors of endemic fauna.

Danube

The fish was introduced accidentaly in Europe in the 1960s into ponds in Nucet, Dâmboviţa County, Romania and it made its way into Danube, then spreading throughout Europe.

Native from North American continent.

1. In the upper basin of the river Mississippi

2. Great Lakes

3. The Atlantic Ocean basin

Carassius gibelio

Why invasive ?

Can live in very low-oxygen

waters.

It feeds on larvae,

crustaceans, vegetation,

shellfish and

fish eggs.

Crucian carp (Carassius Carassius)

Gibel carp

Prussian carp

Silver Prussian carp

Gibel carp can be

considered the no.1 enemy of Crucian carp .

It is the main factor contributing

to the extinction of many waters

of Crucian carp.

It occupies the trophic

niche of Crucian carp

which is a native species

Gibel carp females enter

in reproductive season

before females of

Crucian carp species,

using their males

to reproduce.

Class - Actinopterygii

Order - Cypriniformes

Family - Cyprinidae

Carasul

Japanese knotweed

Japanese bamboo

Why invasive ?

Is the best known and widespread freshwater fish in Romania.

The colour of stains depends on water living.

In Japan is called

"itadori"

a name meaning

"strong plant".

Amur River basin

Native spreading area

It is listed by the

World Conservation Union

as one of the world's

worst invasive species.

Invasive species of fish

S I B E R I A

Pose danger to Sunbleaks

-Leucaspius

delineatus-

Fallopia japonica

Invasive,

fast growing, reach 2m.

They also feed

on eggs of locally valuable native fish species.

Once installed, it spread

on significant areas

and replaces indigenous

plants.

They are the carrier of a parasite

Sphaerothecum destruens

that attacks the sunbleaks which

have a higher mortality when infected.

In our country is frequently spread along riverbanks and streams, especially in Transilvania.

Order: - Caryophyllales

Family – Polygonaceae

Genus: - Fallopia

1912

In waters rich in vegetation the scales beat to green

In the clear waters its color is golden brown .

In muddy waters his scales may be black

  • According to scientific data, in our country were introduced in the last years more than 30 non-native species of fish, of which 5 are known as invasive.

Native spreading area

Invasive Alien Species have been pointed out as the second cause of species extinction at the world level after habitat loss.

The 12000 alien species known in Europe represent a large threat to the continent's biodiversity.

Among these, aquatic invasive species, both plant and animal pose a serious problem to the biological diversity of freshwaters.

There are 67 inventoried invasive alien species in aquatic ecosystems in Romania, of which 40% fresh water species.

Sankt Petesburg

Is a fearsome fish predator.

He feeds with insects, crustaceans, frogs,

plants, fish eggs and small fish.

Why invasive ?

Ictalurus melas

ROMANIA

1861

A substantial threat to local populations of amphibians

Somnul negru pitic

Populations of animals are reduced

beneath the mats

The mats can affect the water by eliminating submerged plants

- block oxygen diffusion

- prevent their photosynthesis

Black Bullhead

Black Catfish

Specimen caught in 2005 in the Danube, in front to

the Iron Gates Region Museum in Dr. Turnu Severin.

It is considered a pest due to excessive consumption

of fish eggs.

1920

First imported into Europe in France, 1861, then imported into Germany in 1880 and 1885

Was brought in 1872 in the botanical gardens in Europe.

In 1916 it was discovered in the Danube Delta, in 1920 in Bucharest Romania.
