Digital Citizenship: Being Responsible on the Internet

WHY Should We Teach Our Children To Practice Digital Citizenship?

WHAT is Digital Citizenship?

HOW Can Our Children Practice Digital Citizenship?

Digital Citizenship is the social norms for appropriate, responsible use of technology (Ribble, 2013).

Digitial Citizenship includes:

-practicing safe, legal, and responsible use of technology

-having a positive attitude towards technological tools which support collaboration, learning, and productivity

-understanding human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology ("Digitial Citizenship Means...")

-portraying proper digital etiquette

-What we post on the internet, whether it be pictures, words, video, etc., will be there forever

-Once information is posted online, there is no going back; that information is permanent

-Anyone can get access to information that is posted on the internet

-Digital citizenship not only involves practicing safety, but proper social conduct. Live by the golden rule "treat others the way that you want to be treated"

We can teach them to:

-Be cautious as to what information is put on the internet (DO NOT put any personal information such as phone number or address)

-Don't talk to strangers

-Show respect to others online

-Think before posting; something that may be considered "cool" today could cost you tomorrow

-Respect others work (DO NOT plagiarize, download music illegally, etc.)

-Use privacy settings on social media sites

-Converse with others as they would face-to-face
