The Development of Todays Literacy

Chinese Confucians: Ju

The ju, meaning scholars, were the first Chinese people to become literate. They also created serveral books and teaching methods.

Invention of the Internet

The invention of the internet in 1969 revolutionized literacy. Learning was no longer confined in classrooms and books, but expanded throughout 75% of the world!

These ancient Indian religious officials created texts that were utilized at ceremonies. Later, teachers studied the works of the priests.

Rabbis educated Jews using their knowledge of the Torah and other texts in the Talmud. This is still taught worldwide today.

Sumarians and Babylonians developed this script for the puropse of administrative documentation. Romans are credited to the invention of the pencil, then a "stylus."

The Pope had granted teachers the privilege to educate others, but only in specified subjects. This later resulted in the development of universities.

With the new spread of literacy, the desire for documentation and record keeping increased. Officials were then required to be literate in the same way. However, it did not spread widely as literacy was not seen as relevant to wealth or power.
