United Farm Workers
He worked for higher wages and better working conditions for migrant workers.
He lead strikes against the way farms where being run. He promoted a boycott of grapes and lettuce until a change was made. A boycott is where people don't buy the product. This would hurt the farmers because they wouldn't be able to sell their produce.
Chevaz wanted a change in the use of pesticides on our food.
He lead several boycotts during his lifetime to fight for
change.
Lyndon was born and raised in Texas where his family was very poor.
He was only one of four people to hold the following federal offices: Representative, Senator, Vice-President, and President.
He became president when President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed while in office. Johnson was sworn into office aboard a plane.
Paul worked with other patriots to keep an eye on the British military who were about to attack. They had set up an alarm system to let others know of the approaching troops.
The Great Society promoted programs that
wanted to eliminate poverty and racial justice.
Medicare, Medicaid, and programs for the elderly were part of The Great Society.
He was the great-grandson of a slave.
His original name was spelled Throughgood but when he was in 2nd grade he changed the spelling to Thurgood.

distant cousins.
Women's Rights - Suffrage
Eleanor gave speeches and made public appearances to help her husband.
She was arrested for voting before women had the right.
She was for equal rights for all people. Once she even sat between a group of whites and a group of blacks so neither group would think she favored them.
She was very outspoken for
the things she believed in.
Joined with other women in the mission to gain voters' rights.
She was a chairperson for the
United Nations.
She and Elizabeth Cady Stanton lead the
movement. They gave speeches around the
country and even wrote a journal called
The Revolution.
Susan died before women
were given the right to vote. It is called the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
Susan was the first woman to be on a coin.
Education and Civil Rights
The 32nd President
Bethune was 1 of 17 children in her family and the only one sent to school
Before he was president he contracted polio and became paralyzed. He thought his political career was over. His wife, Eleanor, encouraged him to continue.
The only President to be elected
4 times. He died before he finished the 4th term.
She started her own school for black girls in Dayton, Florida. When the school opened she only had 6 students. To raise money for her school she cooked sweet potato pies and other food and sold the food to construction workers next to her school.
He started The New Deal to help Americans during
The Great Depression. Some of the programs
provided government jobs, bank reform, and help
for farmers.
Bethune used burnt pieces of wood and fruit juice as pencils and ink. She found crates and boxes for desks and chairs.
She was a supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
She worked along with Eleanor Roosevelt to promote
civil rights and equality for the African Americans.
Segregation was still active during her lifetime.
