The Milky Way Galaxy

A galaxy is a group of

stars, dust, and gas

bound together by gravity.

We live in the

Milky Way Galaxy.

The sun is at the center of our galaxy.

There are 8 planets that are bound to the sun by gravity.

The dark spots on the sun are where it is cooler.

The bright spots are where it is hotter.

Mercury is the smallest planet.

Mercury can be from

-300 degrees to 860 degrees.

Nobody could live on Mercury because there is no air and no atmosphere.

One day on Mercury is 58 Earth days.

Mercury has no moons.

Mercury is mostly made up of iron.

The second planet from the sun is

Venus.

Venus has a thick atmosphere

that is hard to see through.

Venus is about the same size as Earth.

Venus has mountains,

volcanoes, and sand,

but no air to breath.

Venus is close to the sun.

So, all of it's water has evaporated.

Venus doesn't have any moons.

The third planet from the sun is

Earth

More than 7 billion people

live on Earth.

The average temperature is 73 degrees.

Earth is the largest of the

terrestrial planets.

Earth's moon is named Luna.

Earth is 93 million miles

away from the sun.

The fourth planet from the sun is

Mars.

Mars has 2 moons.

The largest volcano in the

solar system is on Mars.

Mars is called the red planet.

It's soil is red, dry, and dusty.

Mars has a thin atmosphere

with a tiny amount of oxygen and water.

Mars is smaller than Earth.

The temperature on Mars never

goes above zero degrees.

The fifth planet from the sun is

Jupiter.

Jupiter is the largest planet

in our solar system.

It is the first of the giant gas planets.

It has rings that are hard to see.

It has 66 moons!

It has an atmosphere that is mostly clouds.

The sixth planet from the sun is

Saturn.

Saturn is the second largest planet,

and it is also a gas giant.

Saturn has 9 rings made of

ice, dust, and rocks.

Saturn has an atmosphere.

The seventh planet from the sun is

Uranus.

Uranus is a gas giant,

but some people also call it

an ice giant.

Uranus is the 3rd largest planet.

It has rings,

but they are tilted sideways.

Uranus has 27 moons.

It has an atmosphere.

The eighth planet is

Neptune.

Neptune has 12 moons.

Neptune has rings,

but they are hard to see.

Neptune is also an ice giant.

Neptune has an atmosphere.

Neptune is the 4th largest planet.

This is the solar system within

the Milky Way Galaxy.

The planet closest to the sun is Mercury.

Facts about the sun:

The sun is about 5 billion years old.

It has 62 moons.

This is a solar flare.

Jupiter is much bigger

than Earth!
