CELLS

What makes up a cell?

nucleus

The nucleus is where the DNA is held, and is found only in Eukaryotic cells.

What about Prokaryotes?

Prokaryotes have a nucleoid, or an area, rather than an actual organelle where DNA is held. In prokaryotes, the DNA is circular.

other organelles include...

Mitochondria

Helps produce ATP for the cell

Endoplasmic reticulum

Provides transportation for vesicles throughout the cell

Ribosomes

Make proteins from amino acids for cell. Are attached to the rough ER.

Cell Membrane

Provides a layer of protection for the cell. Is "selectively permeable" meaning meaning that it allows some material in, but not others. Is made up of a phospholipid bilayer.

Prokaryotes vs. Eukaryotes

Prokaryotes are much smaller than Eukaryotes.

Prokaryotes are far less complex than eukaryotes, and the organelles do not have a double membrane like in Eukaryotes.

Eukaryotes have a nucleus, Prokaryotes have a nucleolus.

Porkaryotes can survive in much harsher climates than Eukaryotes.
