Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

He based the character Sherlock Holmes on his university teacher, Doyle began writing his stories during the slow hours at his Medical Practice in 1 Bush Villas (Elm Grove) the practice was not very successfull so he wrote his novels and stories during this time.

Died 7 July 1930 age 71

A Hunting Morning

By Arthur Conan Doyle

Put the saddle on the mare,

For the wet winds blow;

There's winter in the air,

And autumn all below.

For the red leaves are flying

And the red bracken dying,

And the red fox lying

Where the oziers grow.

Put the bridle on the mare,

For my blood runs chill;

And my heart, it is there,

On the heather-tufted hill,

With the gray skies o'er us,

And the long-drawn chorus

Of a running pack before us

From the find to the kill.

Then lead round the mare,

For it's time that we began,

And away with thought and care,

Save to live and be a man,

While the keen air is blowing,

And the huntsman holloing,

And the black mare going

As the black mare can.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was a television show which aired in 1984-1994 It was produced by a British television company Granada Television.

Jeremy Brett starred as Sherlock Holmes bringing a unique portrayal of him.

From the 60 stories made by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle 42 were adapted into the show.

Sherlock Holmes Museum

In 1990 a museum dedicated to Sherlock Holmes was made, it is a non profit organisation. Visitors can step into the house which Sherlock Holmes occupied with his partner Doctor Watson it is set on the address Conan Doyle wrote. However there have been disagreements with the museum as Dame Jean Conan Doyle didnt want her fathers character to be thought of as a real person, she refused the offer to have a room made in the house dedicated to her father.

From the poster there is a resemblance to the movies style for the title. The whole name hasn't been used only 'Sherlock' this could show how the series has been modernised.

An updated version from Conan Doyle's stories the first series it aired on the BBC in 2009 the second series aired in 2011. The show recieved a BAFTA award in 2011 for best drama series. There has been a total of sic episodes during this time.

This is the main soundtrack which is most recognised in the film and trailerit was also used in the first film in the credits.

This is similar to the main soundtrack, the strong use of violins coresponds itself to to Sherlock Holmes who is known for playing a violin

Poster's

The posters were carefully produced, the images used corispond well with

the style of the film. In this poster editing has been done Sherlock Holmes's

eyes are enhanced to connect with the public. The editing to the eyes relate

to the second trailer "Everything, that is my curse" the eyes are his tools in

the film as he uses his eyes and captures every detail in his observations.

The low contrast in the background make Holmes stand out, the Eiffel Tower

gives a hint to the audience of where his next case will take him. The silver gun

in his hand shows he is at a new leval of violence as in the previous film he didnt

use a gun, this shows a development of the character.

The title is located on the bottom of the poster as the photo is the main atraction, the use of block font adds a dramatic effect on the poster the colours used also relate to the time the film is set when metal was the most popular material. Only "SHERLOCK HOLMES" is in a large font as this will make the public notice the poster as it is a reconizable name. The release date is in a smaller font but is in a different colour this adds to the poster to be noticed.

Editing has also been done to Watson's eyes making them stand out this relates to the second trailer when Holmes says to Watson

"You know my methods". This also represents their close bond and how it has become strongerin the sequal.

The side angle which he stands could suggest he is prepared for battle with weapons in his hands. Watson wears gloves this adds to his upper class image, on the other hand they will help him when he fights as this gives him more grip. The smart clothing he wears shows his class.

The same bold lettering is used in the title creating an impact and the red lettering for the release date is very eye catching.

The only Female poster her clothing shows her class and her character as a gypsy the colour of her dress is dark but with rich tones similar to Holmes's vest. The daggers in her hands show she is not a damsil in destress but that she is a strong women, her choice of weapon is simple but takes a very skilled person to use while Holmes uses a gun and Watson uses what appears to be a sword, the gypsy is obviously the character with a steady hand. The daggers could represent how confident she is as the use of daggers means being closer to the target in comparrison to a sword and gun.

The title is the same as the previous posters all saying "SHERLOCK HOLMES" this is the name of the film but can represent what side the character is with.

This poster shows the villian in the movie, the position of his hads supports this theory as this is the common hand expression for a plan developing mainly used for villians. His choice of clothing shows his class and he is the only character so far who wears a top hat a symbol of a very high class. Not much editing has been done to his eyes compared to the previous posters of the 'good' characters this could also support the fact he is the evil character.

The background chosen is a significant location for Moriaty as this is the last location he is in. Also this is the final location for the heros before the ending of the film. This mansion represents Moriarty's power and his leval of class.

The main title is not used in Moriaty's poster this could suggest the separation of class and that Moriarty is Sherlock Holmes's rival.

Exhibition

A positive review of the film, parts of the plot are mentioned. A negative reaction to Noomi Rapace

A review of the film by Shubha Shetty Saha, mentions the number of fight scenes pulls you away from the main plot on the other hand he includes that the 19th century London design is "amasing" but moves on to say there is so much to throw you off from the plot.

A interview with the main characters of the film we hear from their point of view about the film/ production with added clips from the film.

Distribution

Distributed by Warner Brothers, a few months during the films time in the cinema Warner Brothers announced that there is a first draft to a Sherlock Holmes 3, not much is known about this news apart from Drew Pearce is in the process of writing a script

Official trailer to the film, the music corispondes to the action scences used, the first appearence of Sherlock Holmes the music changes to an up beat tune welcoming him back to the audience. The ring sound used as Holmes winks shows the charm side while the ending to the trailer relates to the partnership between Watson and Holmes also the comedy in the first movie.

This trailer is much longer than the first trailer this is to show the audience more about the film, it doesn't reveal much of the plot only the action scenes are shown with more special effects clips.

To promote the release of Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows, the Baker Street underground was re-tiled including tiles made specificaly to advertise the film.

To promote the first film, was life sized figures were made of Robert Dowey and placed on platforms in the Baker Street underground.

Propaganda posters were used in a form of communication aimed to influence the public, mainly known for it's use during WW2. These poster here were made in relation to Sherlock Holmes.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2011/dec/22/the-artist-film-review

A positive review of the film, a rating of five stars recomending to every generation, with the use of black and white makes the film take the audience on a trip through time to when this type of film was popular. The dancing scenes were perfectly entertaining and with the added comedy between a small dog and his owner brings scilent humour.
