Catching more fish than the system can support, leading
to an overall degradation on the system.
AND
A non-sustainable use of our oceans.
Why does our society
An educated and informed society
Insist upon taking advantage of our world resources
To the extent that they're very nearly
wiped out entirely
HOWEVER
Countless other countries contribute to the
depletion of our oceans fish and wildlife
Some of which include:
China
India
Peru
Iceland
Japan
Philippines
Chile
Korea
Denmark
Spain
Thailand
Indonesia
Mexico
And
On
And
On...
One would wonder how these
countries are coping with this issue?
In most circumstances the answer is simple.
They aren't coping.
In some instances there is absolutely
nothing being done to correct overfishing.
Member countries of the European Union regulary overlook Scientific suggestions when setting their annual "catch quotas"
Scientistis from the International council for the
exploration of the Seas recommended a 40 percent cut in annual catches for 1995
The European Union agreed
to a shockingly mere 5 percent cut
If this continuing trend of failing fisherie managment continues
much of the ocean will be facing it's death bed
According to the National Marine Fisheries Service
a whoping 80 percent of commercially valuable fish populations
That's
122 different species
Are currently either
FULLY
or
OVEREXPLOITED
Fishing is an ancient tradition
Which satisfies vital food needs of
countless peoples across the globe
Economically
Socially
And
Culturally
Today, however, tradition has morphed into a
resource depleating industry spanning the world
Leaving no country without fault
Natures balance is becoming ever more unstable and crippled
across all areas of the worlds oceanic ecosystems
Many of these changes
may be irreversible
Since all components in marine ecosystems are interlinked, you can't change one thing without affecting everything else
If a particular species is heavily fished
Many species of marine wildlife are threatened by the
competition with fishing operations
It is not simply the targeted population that is affected, but the entire ecosystem
Sharks
Seals
Dolphins
Whales
Seabirds
Turtles
Just to name a few
