Currently we require that students take English and Mathematics as mandatory subjects throughout their high school career

English cannot be dropped at all, and dropping mathematics severely limits future options

Differentiating learning by selecting optional courses is extremely limited; typically most junior high school students only get two optional courses per year

Freeing up secondary education from 19th Century habits based on renaissance ideas about liberal arts and foundations of learning could open up many possibilities for students in the 21st Century

grade 10 literacy and numeracy are survey courses designed to accurately assess a students basic skills in literacy and numeracy in a detailed manner through many differentiated approaches; the end result is an accurate and specific look at students skills in these key areas

Students who fail literacy or numeracy are required to retake it until grade 12. If they have still not passed it when they reach 30 credits, they are granted a partial diploma noting their failures and graduated

There are no short cuts, summer school options or last minute senior courses to bypass the literacy and numeracy requirements, students must demonstrate skill in order to pass these courses, though they are the furthest thing from a standardized test - the teachers of these courses use as many approaches as possible to allow students to demonstrate skills.

Completing literacy and numeracy successfully results in certifications. Those willing to leave high school at this point may do so legally, though they are not carrying a diploma, they are considered literate, numerate and capable

Students may leave high school legally after passing literacy and numeracy to pursue work or apprenticeship

This system requires skills in foundational areas while offering as wide a diversity of courses as possible based on student interests and abilities.
