POSTER

SHORT FILM

The second biggest text on the poster are the director and actors' names. This is because they are unique selling points to the film. I have also used the same colour as the key in the title to make them stand out on the blue background. The actors' names are lower down in the poster by the images of them while the director's name is at the top near the title. This is because the director hasn't got an image so his name is by the title like the author of a book whereas the actors' names are almost labeling their images.

At the end of my short film, I have credits to clarify who the characters where and to give recognition to everybody involved. Not too many people were involved in my short film but credits are still a convention that I have followed. I decided to make my credits look like some sort of year book to make it synergise with the film which was set in school. When a short film is uploaded online, a second video can be uploaded with it. The second video would include behind the scenes footage or outtakes. Due to not having a lot of extra footage, I decided to include it in my credits like a bonus feature in a normal film. The shots show my actors as themselves rather than as their characters which I think can make the actors look more humble and real.

I have followed a lot of the general conventions my short film. My film is under 45 minutes long, it is a comedy so it includes a funny story and jokes and has a twist in the story. A convention I have broken is including a screen for the production company. A lot of short films normally have a Youtube channel so rather than showing the production company, they have a little icon of their channel profile in a corner of the screen. In my case, I decided to include a production company to show my animation skills and because my story isn't a Youtube production.

POSTER

SHORT FILM

For my poster, I have used a blue colour scheme because this colour represents sadness and isolation which is what my short film is about. At the top of my poster is my title. The title is the biggest text on the poster to draw the audiences attention. The letter A is the title is replaced by a padlock and the E is replaced by a key. This is because they have a similar shape so the title can still be read but also because a lock and key represents being locked up or trapped.

The music used in the background of my short film clearly gives the scene a different emotion each time. For example, slow music is used for boredom, dramatic music is used for an apology and silly music is used for the funny twist ending. Like most short films, I decided to include a twist ending to make the story a little bit more exciting to watch. The twist in my film is also used to make the story funnier considering I have chosen comedy as my genre. I had the music stop at certain points to highlight the joke that was just said. I have saw this technique being used by Tomska on Youtube. An example of a video where he does this is 'Holy Shit Cats'. I believe the lack of music highlights the comedy at key moments when used.

POSTER

In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge the conventions of real life products?

The images I have used are not photographs of my actors or film. Instead, they are a digital drawing of the characters that look very similar to the real person. Normally, a film would take a photo to represent the film on the poster but I have decided to break this convention. This is because of a short film creator called 'Charlie McDonald' whose posters where digital drawings rather than the real thing. I really liked his posters so I used them as a reference for my poster.

POSTER

SHORT FILM

For my introduction to the film, I decided to use a few location shots. Because it is a short film, it doesn't have a lot of time to show the location of the story so I decided to make it obvious at the start to help the storyline take place after it. This makes it easier for the audience to understand hat is happening considering my film is only about 5 minutes.

SHORT FILM

Allan Unsworth

To begin with, my short film starts with a production company screen and a title screen. I watching a lot of short films on the internet and researching into different genres, I have found that it is a directors choice whether to put the title screen at the beginning or ending of the film. I decided to put mine at the beginning so I could introduce the film slowly and exit the film without interruptions. I believe this helps with the flow of my short film and helps maintain a funnier ending without the interruption of a title screen. I animated my title screen and production company because the title screens that were available didn't quite have the look I wanted.

The background of my poster shows a faint drawing of a horse head in the same style as characters in front of it. This is a reference to what happens in my short film and also helps draw the audiences attention to the poster. This pulls both images together to make an overall piece of digital art much like the posters I had mentioned before.

Between my main shots of the characters at the start, there is a small clip of a very weird message that has been written multiple times as if someone i in detention. This is a reference to something that happens later in the film but for no is a very random piece of footage that I believe adds to the humour. The humour found in shot films is normally quite satirical because this is the easiest form of humour to portray in a short amount of time. I used the same humour to criticize the way the world sees teenagers by making them a lot more dumber than they are already stereotyped as while also including small subtle jokes throughout. My film is aimed at a younger audience so they should just appreciate the jokes, but if a parent happened to also be watching, they should understand a bit more.

REVIEW PAGE

Throughout my film, I have used a digital clock time transition between shots. I had seen a similar effect used in a film a long time ago (So long that I can't remember the name) but I liked the effect and thought that it would add to the humour by showing that my story is escalating in such a short period of time.

Short Film

I have used a large photograph for my main image much like film magazines do. This is to draw the audiences attention to the story because they can see the actors who are a unique selling point. The actors names are in bubbles above the images to clarify who they are but to make their names stand out like in the internet magazine. In the bottom right corner, there is a page number which is key to all magazines. My secondary image is in a separate bubble. This is a digital image of the directors/Youtubers profile picture. Once again, this is another unique selling point.

POSTER

For my first shot of my characters, I showed them leaving school. The music which was non-diegetic for the opening is now diegetic as this is the music that Leon is listening to. As Leon takes his headphones out, the music goes quieter so that it is now background music. This is so we can hear what the characters are saying clearly.

The smallest text on my poster is in a different font and is directly underneath the title. This is the text that defines who and what productions where involved in the making of the film. This is the last convention I have followed for my poster. I did not include a tagline for my film because I believe that the one word title 'Trapped' is catchy enough to not need a tagline. I also didn't include a date for my short film. This is because most films have a date of release in the cinema and it is only in the cinema for a limited time so the date is important. For a short film, the film will be on the internet forever does not have a limited time of access so the date is a lot less important. My references also didn't have a date on them but this is a broken convention due to most short film posters having a date.

I set up a tripod and started recording before students began to leave my school. Once the bell rang, everybody started to leave but because I had footage of the same location with no body there, I was able to use a fading transition to make it look like the students have disappeared. I believe this was a good effect and was able to easily show the difference between being in a crowded school location to now being lonely or isolated in the same place. A lot of short films have quite good effects on them due to having a nice budget to work with but I didn't have a high budget so this was the best I could do.

REVIEW PAGE

I had found that most review pages were a double page spread so I decided to do the same thing. I used the blue colour scheme and the same title to make it obvious that the review was of the short film. I mixed two genres of magazines together because most short films are on the internet or are made by famous youtubers so I decided to mix the conventions of a internet based magazine called 'Oh My Vlog' with conventions of film magazines.

REVIEW PAGE

To begin with, I made four white columns for the black sanserif text to be on. This is to make the artice easily readable. I then added bold blue bubbles over some of the boxes. This is like the internet magazine because it makes extra information stand out. It can also include some information that is unrelated to the review but related to the creator. The text in the bubbles is bigger and the text is white to make it pop out of the pages more and grab the audiences attention.

I have included who the writer of the article was by the title at the start of the article because this is where I had space to put the name. Normally the writer's name would be at the end but if the writer is a unique selling point, their name would be at the start to make the audience want to read that specific article. I have a box of general information about the story and the creator like the internet magazine has because it highlights how famous the Youtuber/creator is before the article.
