We need to act now!

Thank you

More than 64% of the oceans lie beyond the jurisdiction of any one country. Fishing vessels are now able to fish all over the world, including the Antarctic regions, and to depths of several kilometres using powerful sonar and satellite equipment to locate their catch.1

OVERFISHING

SEAFOOD TO AVOID

Plundering today’s high seas

Western Atlantic Bluefin has declined by 83% SINCE 1950

Unless the current situation improves, stocks of all species currently fished for food are predicted to collapse by 2048

Plenty of fish in the sea ? 85% of the world’s fisheries are fully exploited, over exploited, depleted or recovering from depletion.

300,000 Whales, dolphins and porpoises die each year as a result of becoming entangled in fishing gear.

Fishing has two types of impact on the environment. Direct impact such as bottom trawling which physically destroys the ecosystems. Other impacts are alterations to the ecosystems from loss of biodiversity, invasive species to fish farms releasing excess nutrients and chemicals causing a negative impact.

UP To 73 Million Sharks each year thrown back with their fins cut off

32% of Pelagic Sharks are threatened with EXTINCTION

Resilience of the ocean to climate change is severely compromised by other stressors from human activities, including fisheries, pollution, invasive species and habitat destruction.

Fishing industry support the livelihoods of 540 million approximately 8% of world’s population. The collapse fish stocks will lead to devastating effects to income and malnutrition to the world’s poorest nations relied upon the industry.

Marine Protected vs Pirate/Large Scale Fishing Areas

Subsidized by many governments, the Global Fishing Fleet is big enough to catch 2.5x what the ocean produces!

For every pound of Shrimp caught, 3-15 LLB OF OTHER SEALIFE are thrown away.

Less than 1% of the high seas is protected as marine protected areas. No-take zones allow depleted fish population to recover even from stressed reefs.

Less than 1%

Protected

Take Action

Buy Seafood with MSC and ASC labels

Support WWF and Greenpeace to stop governments paying billions of dollars to subsidize the fishing fleets contributing to overfishing

Awareness! Tell your friends and family. Change the way governments feel about the issue so more can be done. UNDESCO and IOC are working with governments to implement guidelines and proposals to improve more sustainable management as well as development of a multilateral agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, ultimately to change fishing practices, set up marine protected areas, improving resilience of ecosystems to tackle larger problems like climate change.
