- Leukemia is a type of cancer in the bone marrow characterized by an unusual increase of white blood cells.
How it is contracted or how it occurs in the human body (path of transmission or process of development).
• No single reason for development of Leukemia (many different types)
• Is a result of somatic mutations in the DNA
• May result from radiation or from carcinogenic substances
• Could be influenced by genetic factors
- Symptoms:
- Fevers
- infections
- weakness or fatigue
- headaches
- bruising on the skin
- bleeding from the gums or rectum
- swelling in the belly or spleen
- swollen lymph nodes
- unusual weight loss
Ability to maintain homeostasis
- To many blood cells in your bone marrow so your body reacts in a not so positive way making your body unable to maintain homeostasis
- The main goal of treatment for leukemia is to get rid of the leukemia cells and to have your body form new healthy cells in the bone marrow.
- chemotherapy is a drug used to fight cancer
- The drug is administered in 3 stages
Induction
- Your are kept in the hospitalmost of the time and given a high dose of the drug
Consolidation
- when tests show that there are no more leukemia cells
- Some may be hidden
- The drug is still given but at different doses and schedule
Maintenance
- To prevent cells from coming back.
- Get chemotherapy every 2-3 years.
