Autumn at 59
We are told that being old
isn't beautiful...
...that the lines etched into
our skin...
...the scars that mar our
bodies and psyches...
...must be fixed...concealed...
denied.
We're told the gnarled
features...
...the bent limbs shaped over
decades by relentless winds...
We're told that all flaws must
be corrected...
...that recapturing our beauty
is to recapture our youth.
But what if I don't need to be
fixed...
...don't want the lines,
the scars...
...the gnarled features
concealed...
...don't want to recapture a youth
I'm grateful to have left behind.
...to see the beauty in my
rough, imperfect features?
There is no going back...the only path
is forward...to embrace the imperfect,
the lined, the scarred, the gnarled, and
celebrate the beauty from within.
Why are the imperfections
gathered over a lifetime not
embraced?
...and a lifetime of
experiences...
...we're told these must be
fixed, concealed, denied.
Why is it that we fail to recognize the
shortened days, the cold winds and
rains of autumn bring out the beauty
that lies within us?
Why are they not honored?
Why am I not told to look
more deeply...
