When doing this literally everything is checked, so instead of writing it out I’ll give you a list:
- Bags are opened
- BA (breathing apparatus) masks
- Lights, horn, sirens
- Does the engine turn on?
- Lockers on the fire engine and everything in them
- Every bag in the front of the fire engine
Then they went on to do have their brief. This is where they plan what they are going to do for the morning. Yesterday they had to test some of their equipment, which may be tested daily, monthly, quarterly etc. They tested the BA masks and air tanks, fan (this was a bit loud!) and a few other things. Once they had done all of their tests it was breakfast.
After they had eaten they went straight on to doing their working at heights training. This was great to see as you could see everyone come together and work as a team to keep each other safe. The scenario was that there were two casualties (which were heavy been bags shaped like people) stuck on the 3rd floor of a building and they had both passed out from smoke inhalation. But, both staircases had been deemed unsafe! The only way up was by ladder... which weighs 13-15 stone (it takes four firefighters to get the ladders out and put them up!).
Once they had finished their training it was lunch. But some of the watch were called out to Aston Science Park where they rescued a person from a lift. After that they had to do a bit of (boring) admin on Melio. They had to write out what they had done during the scenario and also look at other stuff they may need training/refreshing in.
Once the admin was finally over I went out with a few of the watch to see what they did when checking high rise buildings. As they have recently inherited a few new high rise buildings they wanted to go and check them. This involves checking if there are any 'Dry Rise' rooms (which have a massive pipe in which carries water all the way up the high rise and then the firefighters can attach their hose to this pipe on any floor!) and checking how many rooms are on each floor. There are a lot of checks they have to do so I won't go into all of them!
So that was the #SMAday with Aston Fire Station (who you can follow on Twitter! @Aston_Fire). I can definitely say that I had an amazing day! With thanks to white watch for being so friendly and looking after me!
The first thing I have to say is that I had an amazing day! I spent the day with White Watch, who were really friendly.
They started off with a hand over, so they could find out from the other watch if there was anything that needed doing or anything that they needed to be made aware of.
After this they did all of their equipment checks, these need to be done at the start of every shift. This is so that they can be aware of any problems with the equipment/any missing equipment (as you wouldn’t want to be on a shout to find out that something is missing/doesn’t work!).
