Introduction
Social Studies Faces 3 Major Problems:
This Prezi presentation was created as a project for the Mount St. Mary College summer grad course ED 5700 - Teaching with Technology.
In this presentation I'll sum up some of the major findings I discovered from the chapter I chose to read for Week 4 of the class. The chapter focuses on technology integration as its relates to social studies education, the field I plan to teach in.
1) People have a hard time taking social studies seriously. This causes the subject to be underfunded in favor of math and the sciences.
2) The politicization of history at both the national and local levels causes divisiveness in how to approach the subject.
3) In the digital age, easy access to information makes it difficult to know where to get our information from and to know when it's reliable.
3) Make Learning Personal: Digital Storytelling
-There are many resources that allow us to make instruction and assessment more personal through the act of telling stories
-One tech resource for helping students to make digital stories about history is https://voicethread.com/
Of These 3 Issues, Information Overload is the Most Pressing When It Comes to Technology Integration
Consider It In More Detail By Watching the Video
Thankfully, There are a Number of Ways to Combat These Issues
Here are a few of them:
4) Make Real World Connections:
Adventure Learning, Geospatial technologies
1) Immersion: Simulations, Virtual Field Trips
-Technology like https://www.google.com/earth/ can helps give us a better sense of geography
-Certain tech resources allow us to experience history as it actually happened, increasing the engagement and learning of students.
-For instance, there are a variety of video games that are great at demonstrating history as it actually happened, including The Oregon Trail and Civilization.
