Introduction to Landscape Architecture: Concepts and Applications

Amman: Collisions

http://www.csbe.org/architectural-laboratory-ii-2005/?rq=architectural%20laboratory

The course explored architectural detailing as an integral part of the architectural design process rather than being merely a sub-category of construction technologies. It took into consideration prevalent construction materials, technologies, and practices within the context of Jordan. The course was instructed by three prominent Jordanian architects: Bilal Hammad, Sahel Al Hiyari, and Hani Husseini. All have made creative and important contributions to developing detailing solutions that have built upon and expanded the skills and technical competencies found in Jordan's construction industry.

This course, which is organized in association with the Agha Khan Trust for Culture, is delivered by CSBE Director Mohammad al-Asad and CSBE Associate Director Lara Zureikat. The course addresses fifteen notable projects from various parts of the world that have received the Agha Khan Award for Architecture and that have contributed to enhancing the quality of urban life.

The Architectural Laboratory is a summer design studio organized in 2003 through which a small number of advanced architecture students and junior architects investigated issues relating to architectural design under the supervision of a group of accomplished, award winning architects from inside and outside Jordan (Bilal Hammad, Sahel Al Hiyari, Hani Imam Husseini, George Katodrytos, Mehmet Konuralp, Suha Ozkan, Yasir Sakr, Jafar Tukan, and Farouq Yaghmour).

The studio was led by three architects involved in both the practice and teaching of architecture. Two of them are from Jordan, Sahel Al Hiyari and Yasir Sakr. The third, Kristopher Musumano, is an American architect from New York City, who joined the studio for its third week.

The Introduction to Landscape Architecture course introduced landscape design concepts focused on water conservation and xeriscape principles. This course introduced topics such as site-specific design, landscape detailing and specifications, and the production of planting plants.

This course was instructed by Lara Zureikat, a practicing landscape architect and CSBE's Associate Director.

The CSBE websites features detailed information on all the activities in which CSBE engages and their outputs. The website is continuously updated to allow for improved and easier navigation. Moreover, all of CSBE’s publications are digitally available on the site.

In addition to CSBE’s digital footprint through its vast website, CSBE inaugurated its Facebook page in 2011. CSBE has used the page to publish work, promote ideas and activities, and to share relevant articles, blogs, and photographs from publications around the world.

Diwan al-Mimar, which extended from 2000 to 2013, was a discussion group that aimed at exploring various issues affecting the built environment in Jordan and beyond in an in-depth and constructive manner by bringing together a mix of academicians and practitioners who participate as members.

This interactive workshop looked into the idea of creativity as an everyday process, and encouraged students to adopt new ways of developing solutions, solving problems, and coming up with innovative products.

The first component of the workshop is information-based, while the second is a series of interactive and participatory sessions aiming at designing and improving upon a specific functional object.

Courses and Workshops

Public Lectures

Intuitive Visualization in Architecture

http://www.csbe.org/intuitive-visualization-in-architecture-2014

CSBE regularly organizes public lectures by specialists visiting from outside Jordan on issues related to architecture and the built environment.

These public lectures aim at keeping the Jordanian public abreast of developments relating to the built environment that are taking place beyond the boundaries of Jordan, on both the regional and international levels.

CSBE’s first public lecture was delivered in 2000 by the late William J. Mitchel, who was then the Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The target of this workshop, led by Sahel Al Hiyari, was to engage the intuitive faculties of expression.

It aimed at accessing the innate tools for understanding and engaging in artistic expression, architectural and otherwise, through imagination.

The workshop focused on the idea of creation through a series of specific exercises that range from visualization, breathing, and drumming, to spontaneous writing, drawing, and model making.
