Emperor Penguin

Habitat

They live in very cold places like the Antarctic with temperatures reaching below -53F.

They swim instead of fly because of the cold weather.

Penguins thermoregulate without altering their metabolism.

Diet

Emperor penguins mainly eat fish crustaceans and cephalopods.

The primary food is the antarctic silver fish.

They can dive as far as 500 meters to get their food and stay under water for about 15 minutes.

Reproduction

The penguins reproduce on stable ice patches.

Breeding colonies are usually located where ice cliffs and icebergs protect them from the wind.

The male penguin takes care of the egg sticking it upright right next to its brood patch.

The breeding cycle for Emperor penguins is 14-16 months and they have internal fertilization, ovoparity, and it lives in groups.
