One novel which explores an important theme is "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood. The novel is a satire set in an imagined future, where the population is declining as a result of infertility and women are forced into various, specific roles. One of these roles is that of a Handmaid, where the only role of that women is to breed. Offred is the central character in the novel and the reader follows her situation, as she attempts to initially come to terms with her restrictive situation and then batttles against it. The key element she uses in that battle is that of desire - something the state works so hard to control and suppress. The novel explores the way in which women's destinies have been tied to their biology throughout history and the ways in which language and culture have been used to control women. It also explores themes of identity and envy. The central theme in the novel, however, is how language can be used as a tool for power and oppression. In the novel, women are denied access to any meaningful language or culture in an attempt to control their thoughts and actions. Atwood constantly highlights the ways in which the male-run authorities resrict women's language and use language as a way to try and convince women that far from contolling them, that the state is trying to protect women.
