In the myth, Hades wants Persephone to be his wife so he kidnaps her. Demeter, Persephone's mom, cries when her daughter is kidnapped. She is the goddess of grain and stops the grain from growing. Zeus goes to Demeter and tries to gets her to stop crying because without any grain, all of humanity is starving. Demeter demands her daughter back before she begins to grow the grain again. Zeus has no choice so he sends Hermes to tell Hades to let Persephone go. Before she goes, Hades has her eat the seed of a pomegranate, the sacred food of the underworld. So she has to visit him for half a year every year. This myth explains why we have seasons. In the fall and winter, Persephone has to go to the underworld. So Demeter mourns and the crops stop growing. In the spring and summer, Persephone comes back and Demeter starts the grain growing again.
