This is one of the most important conventions as the whole point of the advertisement is to promote the artist and sell the album. Something that's extremely hard to do when people don't know what the album is and the artist behind it.
A good example is the poster for Green Day's "21st Century Breakdown" as both the names of the artist and album clearly stand out and can be easily seen.
The main image helps grab the attention of the audience and makes the advert stick in the reader's mind, because of this the main image of the advertisement is often the front cover of the album being promoted. A good example of this is the advertisement used to promote Kings of Leon album "Come Around Sundown".

and here is the advertisement for the album:
This is a convention as it makes the artist instantly recognizable and therefore makes them easier to promote. For example Slash's top hat is part of his image and one of things he is best known for which is why it features on his album covers and his advertisement.
Other conventions include extra selling hooks such as specific singles on the album or retailers that sell the album HMV for example.
Another of these extra selling points is to include ratings from newspapers and tour dates.
They also include record label logos such as mercury.
