Create a "Lex Luger Style" Snare Roll
Now add a note in between the small notes and the larger note.
This is going to create a classic snare roll.
Head back up to the top of the Piano Roll window and click on the second button with a tool wrench on it. Select "Chop" from the drop-down menu.
Key shortcut: Alt + u
Click on the larger chopped notes to copy it to the clipboard. This allows any new note you draw to be of identical size instead of the same as the smaller notes that were chopped earlier.
After selecting "Chop" in step 4, a small window will appear. This window contains various functions but the one valuable to creating a perfect roll is the "Time mul" knob.
You can slide this to the left or right to create as few or many "chops" in the note. For this tutorial, turn the knob to the left one notch. Click "Accept."
Not all "chops" will be equal but we'll fix that over the next few steps!
Assuming Fl Studios is already open, select a snare of your preference.
Right Click on the rectangular box containing the sound. Select "Piano Roll" from the drop-down box.
Select the second note using the same method described in step 3. Go back to Tools > Chop.
In the Chop window, turn the "Time mul" knob to the left one notch. This will chop the note into an even smaller one.
Drag your cursor up to the top of the Piano Roll window and click the button third to last with a small, dash-line box on it.
This is the Select Tool. Now draw a box over the note, releasing only after the note is red instead of the default color, green.
In the Piano Roll window, choose a key.
The higher the key, the higher the note so choose something mid-range. A "safety" note is C5 but for this particular Snare I chose a higher key.
After selecting a key, draw a note covering two of the gray cells.
Now it's time to fix any imperfections. Simply, delete any extra or uneven notes by right-clicking on them.
With the remaining, freshly chopped notes drag them to the beginning of the corresponding gray cell.
All Done! Scroll up to the top, press play, and enjoy!
Drag the red notes down one key to C5.
Repeat the Select, Copy, and Paste step.
Add 5 new notes starting at the beginning of every gray cell.
Drag the red notes down two keys.
Select the notes and hold down Ctrl + C to copy and Ctrl + V to paste. The new notes will not be visible at first.
