What is an ebook?

How do I access the school ebooks?

How many ebooks am I allowed at one time?

Got questions?

We have answers...

How do I find these ebooks?

As with most things at EAMS the easiest way to find our ebooks is to start on our school home page. http://airdrie.rockyview.ab.ca/

Click on the purple button that says 'School Programs'.

Then click on Library/Learning Commons.

Under Library Links you will see EAMS Digital Bookshelf Information, click on that link. This brings up the link for the ebook digital shelf, this is where you will have to log in. You must log in even if you just want to look at the ebook collection. This helps keep the books geared just to our school interests and you the student.

Your log in is the same as most other programs you use at school. Username is 'firstname''middleinitial''lastname'

Password is your student ID number.

What next?

Once you log in to the Destiny Discover webpage you can browse our ebooks. At the top of the screen you will see a way to narrow your search for a book by what's available (availability), Author or even by the name of the series. Those of you in french are able to narrow the search to only french books.

There is also a quick search field.

You can enter any key words you want to search for a book. You can even enter a topic such as 'adventure' or 'fantasy' to narrow the books down.

Where can I see the ebooks I have checked out?

On the top left hand side of the page under the three lines button, you can find which books you have checked out. You will also find your holds that you have on ebooks and your reading history.

You can 'favourite' a book to remember it for later and check in the same place for your list of favourites.

EAMS has ebooks?

Questions?

Don't forget you are allowed to take out TWO ebooks every 12 days, (Novel study or unlimited use ebooks are available for 2 months.) unless you return your ebook early. If you are done reading an ebook please return it early to allow other students to read it and to free up space for you to take out a new book.

If you have any questions or troubles with your account please see me in the Learning Commons or you can e-mail me at kmcgillivray@rvschools.ab.ca

Enjoy your ebooks!!

Ms. McGillivray

At EAMS we are now the proud owners of a collection of ebooks! Ebooks are electronic books. Books that you can download and read on your phone, iPad, tablet, laptop and many other devices.

The best part about these books? They return themselves! No more overdues, no lost books, no torn pages. After your 12 day loan period the book will automatically return itself.

These books are available ONLY to you a student at EAMS. You must have an account to be able to view this collection. All students who attend EAMS will have an account set up for them. They are available to read ALL YEAR LONG including throughout the SUMMER and school breaks, for FREE!

If we have one copy only one student can take out the ebook at a time. You may also find 'unlimited use' ebooks in our collection. These books are available to an unlimited amount of students all at the same time. (Great for novel studies!)

Do I have to have an internet connection to read my ebook?

Destiny Discover has an app you can download to read books 'offline'. (Without an internet connection.) This app is available for most android devices, iPads, iPhones, iPods, some ereaders, laptops and desktop computers. To find the app go to the App store on Apple devices and search 'Destiny Read'. For any other device go to the google play store and search 'Destiny Read'. Once you have this app installed you will be able to download the ebook to read it on your device without an internet connection. Students using laptops or desktop computers need to checkout the book first and then at the top left hand corner under 'menu' can choose 'offline access'. This will download the book to your computer so you can read it in the browser without a wi-fi connection.

If you don't want to or can't download the app you will still be able to read the ebook on the Destiny Discover website. You will just need to have an internet connection at all times to read it.

How do I know what the ebook looks like or what's in it?

How do I learn more about a book?

To learn more about a book click on the title of the book on the Follett Shelf main page. This will bring up what the book is about. Also you will find the button to 'checkout' the ebook. If this book is already loaned out this button will allow you to put a 'hold' on the ebook. Once the student who already has the ebook returns it or their 12 day loan time is up the system will automatically allow the next person with a hold to download the ebook.

In this pop-up you will also be able to write a review for the ebook. Reviews are VERY important. You should write a review on a book you read any time you can. It is a good way for your fellow students to see if it is a book they might like and also it's a great way for me, the librarian, to know which books are interesting to you.

For example if you give a good review to the first book in the Harry Potter series I will know that you will be interested in the second Harry Potter book, making it a book I would probably buy for the school. It's a great way for you to give me your suggestions of what ebooks to buy.

If you click to open the book, you can see the ebook in preview mode. This will allow you to see exactly what the ebook will look like when you read it. It will show you the contents and how many pages there are in the ebook.

This screen also shows you the different things you can do with the ebook once you check the ebook out. At the top right hand side of the screen you can use the SEARCH button to search a specific word or sentence in the ebook. The HIGHLIGHT button allows you to highlight text to remember it for later. The ADD NOTE button allows you to make notes on the ebook and save them. (These tools are great for use with a novel study. There is also the option to print out your notes and highlighted text later under the BOOK NOTES button.) At the tpp of the screen you can adjust the size of the font of the book and many other ways to view it.
