WHAT IS BYOD?
BYOD refers to students & teachers
bringing technology to use in school
vs.
relying only on school-provided devices only
Therefore... maximising resources that are already available...
Reflect, and change where necessary
Some of their 'Survival Guide' ideas:
- Movie trailer
- News broadcast
- Movie
- Weather forecast
- Murder mystery
Phase 2 - Planning
Phase 3
Story boards
Making it happen...
What apps to use
Sharing resources between devices
Learning about time management
Taking photos & videos
Task allocation
Working in teams
Final formats
Phase 4 - Exhibition Day
Students will present their projects to the current Grade 3's and to the their parents
Preparation
Phase 1 - BYOD Licence
Students had to earn their BYOD licence by caring for a small slab of wood for 2 weeks. Points were deducted if you dropped it, forgot it or brought food or drink near it.
They also learned about:
- Discussion evening with parents re project scope and expectations
- Survey re type / number of available devices
- Lockable cupboard for storage
- Research re available software / apps
- Teacher training
- Wireless access point
Cyber safety
Caring for your device
Different types of devices
What was the project about?
- Grade 4 students had to use personal devices to create a 'Survival Guide to Grade 4' for the Grade 3's
- This could be in any electronic story format e.g. movie, presentation etc.
- They had to work in groups and could only work on it at school
- Project duration: 8 weeks / every Friday set aside for BYOD project

Planning & Implementation
Devices & Infrastructure
Tip of the iceberg
...so far
Lessons learned...
Planning should include these questions....
- HOW exactly will the device be used?
- How do we integrate into the curriculum?
- How do we ensure that we're adding academic value?
- Does it assist with developing 21st century skills?
Some days will be...

Good use of BYOD includes synthesis, analysis, evaluation and application
I-Team
- Teacher training & support
- Assist with research
- Project implementation & evaluation
- Stick to set dates & times for classroom activities

BYOD Example 1 (High School)
Even better lesson:
- Real-world themes are identified via blogs during class discussions e.g. environment
- Students organise public awareness campaign using blogs, social media etc.
- Results in action e.g. beach clean-up day
2
Better lesson:
- Use devices to create a public book blog
- Blogs explore character, plot and theme
- Collaborate with others using comments
- Class discussions re blog comments
Bad lesson:
Using devices to take notes in English class
1
- Focus on few apps & subjects / get students involved
3
Even better lesson:
- Students have to create a fractions lesson to present to their peers
- Must be in electronic format e.g. movie, Jing demonstration
- Have to translate the theory into practice, e.g. using fractions to work out discounts whilst shopping
2
Better lesson:
- Maths lesson on fractions divided into teaching time and practice time
- Students download a fractions app (specified by teacher) and use it to practice in class
- Teacher can check their scores to determine whether they need further assistance
1
Bad lesson:
Assignment is to bring any Maths app to class
- You don't always need wireless!
- Teacher training, support & preparation
- Equity ito access (shared / bank)
...and others
The journey ahead...
D Adcock - High School English Teacher
"We must be careful of ensuring that it (BYOD) provides extra value. For example merely taking notes on a device when they could be written, does not add additional value.
For English, our Grade 10 girls currently bring their laptops, cell phones and tablets to class to work on their English book blog project. And also I use TED talks and BBC news articles on my iPad as comprehension projects."
L Abrahams - High School English Teacher
"I use it (iPad) for everything! My set works for English lessons are one here, teacher notes, study guides, diary, notes for and from meetings, lesson planner, daily planner and email.
When I am teaching and an interesting question comes up I can quickly look up a relevant article or picture to help with the explanation without moving away from the front of the class.
There are apps for short stories, radio dramas, sound effects etc."
Teacher comments...
J Wallace - Deputy Head & High School History Teacher
"The iPad has revolutionised my life! I reckon that it saves me anywhere from half an hour to an hour every day just with the email alone."
