Propp's Theory focuses on the idea that all narratives were constructed with particular narrative elements. He believed these elements were consistently used in all narratives, therefore suggesting that all narratives should include these functions somewhere.

This theory by Propp has been re-applied to modern day narratives.

The elements that Propp

said most folk/fairy tale's possessed are

as follows:

Preparation-

- Member of family leaves home/hero introduced

- An interdiction is addressed to the hero.

- The interdiction is violated/villain enters.

- The villain makes an attempt at reconnaissance.

- Villain gains some form of information about the victim.

- Villain attempts to deceive victim

- Victim falls for it and unknowingly helps the enemy.

Complication-

-Villain causes harm to someone important to Hero, eg: family member/family member lacks or desires something.

- This misfortune or lack is made known.

- Seeker agrees to, or decides upon counter-action.

Transference-

- Hero leaves home

- Hero is tested/interrogated/attacked- preparing the way for his/her receiving magical agent/helper.

- Hero reacts to future donor.

- Hero acquires use of a magical agent.

- Hero is transferred/led to the whereabouts of a particular object.

Struggle-

- Hero and villain join in direct combat.

- Hero is branded.

- Villain is defeated

- Initial misfortune is resolved.

Return-

- The Hero returns

- Hero is pursued

- The Hero then escapes or is rescued by someone else.

- The Hero returns and is not recognized.

- A false Hero attempts to claim rewards.

- A task is set for the Hero.

- The task is accomplished.

Recognition-

- The Hero is recognized.

- The False Hero or Villain is unmasked.

- The False Hero or Villain is punished.

- The Hero attains the reward (usually princess/object)
