- In this era horror films were based on classic novels.

- The first 'Frankenstein' film was made in 1910 and the first werewolf film 'The Werewolf' in 1913.

- Horror films in this period were known as 'silent fear' films-even though they had no sound they still managed to scare viewers as it was all new to them.

1950's-1960's

- After the war horror film directors started to base their stories on invasion as this is what most people in this era feared.

- Filmmakers started using making 3D films to capture the audience's interest.

- Films like 'Godzilla' and 'The Thing' use these elements.

1970's-1980's

- Horror films were based upon the social issues of the time, e.g. sexism, war, religion and violence.

- Family members were the main focus of this era.

- Films that use elements like this are 'The Exorcist', 'The Shining' and 'The Omen'.

1990's-2000

- Filmmakers started to make horror films more realistic, rather than making them about monsters.

- They done this by looking at the role of serial killers in order to do this.

- Some films that were made for this are 'Scream', 'Se7en' and 'Silence Of The Lambs'.

2000's

-Over the past 15 years horror films have focused more on gore and torture porn.

-The target audience for recent horror films are teenagers and young adults as this type of horror affects them more.

-Films like 'Saw', 'The Ring' and 'Annabelle' use these elements which is why they are so popular and well-known.
