Seat Design Process

Section A

The purpose of Extensions made in the folie allow for the newly form body to physically experience the same quality of a normal body form.

N

Based on the history of the site and the existing structures, we have designed a Folie which activates the minds of people and lets them experience the site in an educational and memorable way. We wanted visitors to learn through experiencing the journey. The history of the site was an essential aspect we focused on and the existing air-raid shelters provided us with the theme of our concept – war.

Howard Smith Wharves as a building site, its strategical location amongst the surrounding suburbs (CBD, New Farm, Kangaroo Point, Fortitude Valley). This analysis is a unique research that is created in a way that relates to the body. Understanding my chosen theme of 'Volatile Bodies', it has created a representation of an analysis which incorporates an anatomy of skin, bones and veins. Other analysis investigates the creative theory of the transformation of the folie in time. The context map demonstrates potential areas that can be developed. The movement of the folie’s surroundings is portrayed by time phase images which are layered across the panoramic view.

The group decided upon the theme of transformation of movement which was based on restricting the body by "binding". Various possibilities were explored and practiced by using different binding techniques. The final selected method was by binding the two legs together behind the arms or towards the head, and allowing the hands to perform the tasks of the legs. The result presents an understanding of how the transformation of movement can be adapted through the newly formed body.

The tracking represents a physical interpretation of limiting movement. The journey of the track is designed to symbolise revisiting the history of war. The extended concrete barrier possesses the remembrance idea of past war occurrence perceived in present time.

People will learn through experiencing the space. As they travel through the entrance, they will be greeted by an obstacle in the form of steel/concrete beams pertruding from one wall to another. The walls symbolise the warring countries and the beams symbolise the conflict. After the people struggle past the tunnel of conflict, they find themselves in the open centre of the folie where they can find peace.

Plan View

The main materials are raw concrete and corten steel. We wanted to create the feeling of the rubble left behind after the war. People will feel cold and hard which reflects the materials that are used.

Track & Brake Material - Steel (strength, durability)

Site cross sections cutting from New Farm towards Story Bridge at 6 different sections indicated on the map. Below is an animated video of the site with the folie. The video shows cutting through various sections from both side of the bridge.

Design Contribution

Leads people to appreciate the social and cultural aspects of war and the strong morals contained behind the layers of walls. This folie is an exemplar of how the form of the structure is adjustable to the new body. The new folie can portray the remembrance of war and the perception of destruction.

The tracking is implemented in order to transport the designated body throughout the folie.

The functional element of the tracking system is the form of transportation based on requirements of a new body, as the hands have replaced to operate the purpose of the feet. The new body form is assisted with the design of the seat in which is placed on the tracks where the body is pulled along the rail with hands. As the tracks channel a steep slope, this creates an accelerating downstream motion of the seat. A braking system has been designed. When the legs are applied with force onto the top of the seat, the seat will tilt forward hence managing a pulling system on the wired breaks. The brake wires are caused by the clamps in which the user is encouraged to the grasp onto the track. This controls the deceleration of the speed.
