Stellar evolution

Fusion and Star Structure

Small stars < 4x size of Sun

1 . Nebulae

clouds of dust and gas

2. Protostars

3. Main Sequence star

You need to know

about fusion

as well as the structure of a star

Fusion

At very high temperatures and pressures nucleus can fuse .

Why does it have to be so hot ?

Because Nucleus repel each other

Why so much energy ???

Remember the 6 layers Core- Radiative-Convection- Photosphere- Chromosphere

Corona

and what happens in each layer

Core - Hot enough for fusion

Radiative zone

photons pass through this layer by radiative diffusion

Convection Zone currents carry the energy through this zone

photosphere: the innermost layer of the sun's atmosphere that gives off visible light.

chromosphere: the middle layer of the sun's atmosphere.

corona: The outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere that extends into space.

4. Red Giant

Fuses larger elements

They are really big !

5. Planetary Nebulae

Red giant runs out of fuel and fusion stops Shells lost

6. White Dwarf

Large Stars > 4x mass of sun

have short lives !

1. Nebula- 2. Protostar-3. Main sequence

5. Supernova

6. Neutron stars or black holes

Keeping it simply 4 Hydrogen atoms fuse make a helium and lots of energy !

Sun Structure

because......

4. Red Supergiants

7. Black dwarf ?

Good Luck with the exams everyone !
