Mother's Younger Brother becomes involved with Coalhouse Walkers group of followers, and becomes one of their main assets as he can build bombs and create other explosives. He is trained in Fathers fireworks shop, but leaves home to join the group and help them make explosives. He is probably the mastermind behind the bombs used to blow up the firestations, and likely helps set up and wire the dynamite that lines J. P. Morgans library. Explosives had not commonly been used to commit crimes and to threaten establishments for long before this, and its an example of technology that forever changed the way crime could be commited.
Although it didn't play a major role in the novel, the U-boat is a type of submarine that torpedoed and sunk the boat Father was on, the Lusitania, when he was traveling to London. It played a major part in both World Wars.
